WHAT IS EQUIP?

Equip is the EU's flagship ministry training program. Mixing my maritime metaphors, if the EU is likened to a fleet, then equip is our Naval Academy. Through equip you will gain theological and practical ministry skills not only for your time at Sydney University, but for a lifetime of serving Jesus. Equip is held over two hours. The first hour involves a presentation on theological or pastoral issues; during the second hour several training courses are run.

Courses avaliable in Semester 1:

Leading People to Christ (LPC)

If you're new to Equip then this is the course for you; you might call it 'Evangelism 1001'. And if you don't know what the word 'evangelism' means, then you really need to take this course. LPC trains you in 'relational evangelism', which is all about how best to share the good news of Jesus with your friends. We're not talking about standing on a soapbox out the front of the QVB, or walking up to complete strangers on Eastern Ave (though the latter is great fun). What we're taking about is reaching your non-christian friends. Or rather, working with God as He reaches them.

Leading People to Christ + (LPC+)

Mathematicians will tell you that if you put a '+' at the end of something, it makes that thing better. LPC + takes the skills you learnt in LPC and extends them. Given that we live in a pluralist, cosmopolitan society, how are we to defend and contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints? To find out, take this course.

Advanced Pastoral Care (APC)

Let me hit you with some advanced knowledge. In the Latin language, the word 'pastor' means 'shepherd'. So pastoral care is all about tending God's flock. How to encourage, how to correct, how to exhort, how to console, how to organize, how to share God's love: these are the skills you will learn in this course.

Theology Through History (TTH)

Tertullian, Gregory of Nazianzus, Anselm of Canterbury, Melanchthon, Barth: do these names mean anything to you? They're just some of the many figures who populate the rich intellectual tradition that is christian theology. Some of the smartest, nerdiest people who have ever lived have been christian theologians, and you'll learn all about them in this course. Do you wish to explore 'the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God'? Then take this course. Does your heart burn to refute monophysitism or to demolish Pelagianism? Then take this course. Have you barely understood a word of this course description? Take this course.

Preaching the Word (PTW)

Rowan Kemp is delivering this brand new course for 2010. In his own words, the course is all about 'how to proclaim Christ in a talk or sermon. We'll work through preparation and delivery (and give a talk!), deepen our grasp of the doctrine of the Word of God and look at some of the issues surrounding Christian preaching.'
